Description

Sydney Metro West – Eastern Tunnelling Package – Geotechnical Data Report – Nov 2022

This Final Geotechnical Data Report 2 (GDR) is presented as a standalone report and contains the factual
results of the geotechnical investigation undertaken to date for the ETP.
The geotechnical scope of work that has been undertaken to date and is included in this report is from
investigations within the Sydney CBD, Rozelle and Pyrmont areas. These works comprised:
◼ 36 vertical and 9 inclined (at inclinations between 55° and 80° from horizontal) land based geotechnical
boreholes;
◼ 8 vertical marine based geotechnical boreholes within Darling Harbour and Johnstons Bay;
◼ 172 packer (water pressure) tests completed in selected geotechnical boreholes;
◼ Downhole optical and acoustic televiewer in 44 boreholes, with full wave sonic and gamma ray testing in
31 of those boreholes;
◼ In-situ hydrofracture stress testing at seven borehole locations
◼ Installation of 37 groundwater monitoring wells and 1 vibrating wire piezometer in selected boreholes, with
1 groundwater well (ETP-BH018) damaged in December 2021;
◼ Marine geophysics was undertaken on the seafloor in Darling Harbour and Johnstons Bay, with Downhole
Magnetic Gradiometer and Parallel Seismic surveys at borehole locations ETP-BH015 and ETP-BH016;
◼ Laboratory testing of selected soil and rock samples.
Soil and rock samples recovered from the geotechnical boreholes were dispatched to laboratories for testing
designed to classify the soil and rock properties, assess the chemical properties, and undertake strength testing
on selected samples. Soil and rock tests were selected by the Sydney Metro Technical Advisor.
Concurrent with the geotechnical investigation, samples were recovered for contamination testing in selected
boreholes. The results of the contamination testing and laboratory certificates are presented in a separate
Contamination Assessment Report.
